Foods Good for a Healthy Colon

Thinking about a colon cleanse and not sure what you should be eating? Or maybe you just had one, and you want to stay on the right track to stay away from foods that are prone to building up those nasty toxins on the colon walls.

Fiber is a very important ingredient in keeping the colon healthy. It eliminates constipation, and also promotes weight loss through decreased appetite and better absorption of food. It also prevents colon cancer, lowers cholesterol and helps to treat irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis. As a rule of thumb, we should be consuming between 25-30 grams each day. Fruit, vegetables and whole grains are considered to be fiber-rich foods.

There are ways to add in more fiber to the diet. Eat fruit with every meal. Any fruit is good to go with, but raspberries are especially good to go with. Adding flaxseed to the morning cereal also will help, as well as substituting whole grain flour for half of recipes. Experiment with whole grains- use brown rice and wheat pasta instead of the white stuff. Keep in mind that a lot of fiber is found in the skin of the fruit, so peeling will take away those nutrients and benefits.

Water also is needed when keeping a clean colon. We should have at least 64 ounces, or another formula to go by is taking half of our pound weight in ounces. The water keeps our bodies hydrated, but also has a benefit of making our skin glow when it is hydrated.
